How a Septic Tank Works

A septic tank collects wastewater from a property and retains it long enough for solids to settle at the bottom of the tank, forming sludge. Through natural anaerobic digestion, the sludge begins to break down while the treated liquid effluent flows from the outlet into a drainage field for further treatment and dispersal.
